Beth Bernstein

Beth Bernstein graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1991 and from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1994. After graduating from law school, she and her brother, Lowell Bernstein, joined their father, the late Isadore Bernstein, in his law firm. They formed what is now known as Bernstein & Bernstein, Attorneys at Law. Her husband, Rip Sanders, joined the firm in 2010.

Beth Bernstein is a seasoned professional focusing on residential real estate transactions and probate administration. She also represents clients in civil litigation actions, where she advocates on behalf of her clients in intricate legal battles.

Beth Bernstein was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1994. She also was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the United States District Court for South Carolina. She is a member of the South Carolina Bar Association, Richland County Bar Association, and the South Carolina Association for Justice.

Recognitions, Accolades & Community Involvement

In November 2012, Beth was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives for House District 78 and was re-elected in November 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022. Currently, she serves on the House Judiciary Committee as Family, Business, and Probate Laws Subcommittee Chairwoman, the only female and Democrat to serve as a subcommittee chairperson. She also has been elected by the legislative body for four consecutive terms to serve as one of ten members of the House Ethics Committee and currently serves as its Secretary. She has been appointed by the Speaker of the House for three consecutive terms to serve on the Joint Citizens and Legislative Committee on Children and previously served as its Chairwoman. Today, she serves as Chairwoman of the SC General Assembly Women’s Caucus.

Beth is committed to public service and advocates for social justice. Her dedication has earned her several awards and recognitions, including the Conservation Voters of SC’s Green Tie Award, Child Advocate Award from the SCAAP, Legislator of the Year from SmokeFree SC, and the Barbara Moxon Advocacy Award for championing women’s issues. She has also received the Legacy of Caring award from the USC College of Nursing and the Sierra Club of South Carolina’s Legislator of the Year award. Professionally, she was honored with the Richland County Bar Association’s John. W. Williams, Jr. Distinguished Service Award recognizing her for distinguished and meritorious service to the legal profession. The Williams Distinguished Service Award is the highest recognition given by the RCBA. 

Beth is involved in many leadership endeavors. She is a fellow in the Aspen Institute-Rodel Fellowships in Public Leadership and has graduated from leadership programs like The Riley Institute at Furman and Liberty Fellowship. She was also chosen as one of Southeast Small Business Magazine’s 2014 Top Women of Influence and  Business Monthly’s Top 50 Most Influential People in 2012.

Her community involvement extends to various boards and organizations, including the Board of Trustees of Hammond School and the Junior League of Columbia. She is the Past President of the Richland County Bar Association and was selected as The State’s Top “20 under 40” in 2006. She previously served on a wide array of boards, including the University of South Carolina’s College of Nursing Foundation Board, Palmetto Health Cancer Center Board, Three Rivers Heritage and Music Foundation, Columbia Jewish Federation, Beth Shalom Synagogue, Cutler Jewish Day School, South Carolina Philharmonic, and she is a 1998 Graduate of Leadership Columbia.
