Many workers experience a condition called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), also know as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). This syndrome can arise after experiencing an injury to the nerves of soft tissue and then leaving the injury untreated. Over time, RSD causes chronic pain in one or more extremeties. The pain, oftentimes in multiples areas, radiates through the body and makes holding down a regular job extremely difficult. As employees are being asked to put in more and more hours at work and perform an increasingly wider variety of tasks, cases of RSD are on the rise.
Due to various workplace pressures, employees are likely to never report injuries that occur on the job. After falls or strains or experiencing back pain, many employees never seek medical treatment. RSD is a direct result of not being treated for workplace injuries. As time passes, the pain that employees experience may become so intense that they are unable to come to work and/or become dependent on pain medications. Workers may just see pain as a normal part of the workday, but pain at work is not normal. Employees should see proper medical care to determine the cause of the pain and have it treated.
