Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is often a workers’ compensation injury. Bernstein and Bernstein can assist you in filing your workers’ compensation claim.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is often the result of repetitive motion or stress of the wrist. It has been linked to the workplace on many different occasions. The repetitive motion causes injury to the soft tissue and tendons near the wrist. The tissues and tendons swell and bunch in the carpal tunnel passage. As the hand and wrist are moved, these bunched tissues and tendons rub against the nerve, which causes pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist and radiates up the arm.
Symptoms usually start gradually, with frequent burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers, especially on the thumb and index and middle fingers. The fingers may feel useless or swollen, even though little or no swelling is apparent. Since many people sleep with their wrists flexed, the symptoms often first appear during the night. Upon waking, sufferers may feel the need to “shake out” the hand or wrist. As symptoms worsen, the hand may tingle during the day. Decreased grip strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects, or perform other manual tasks. In chronic and/or untreated cases, the muscles at the base of the thumb may waste away. Some people are unable to tell between hot and cold by touch.
Carpal tunnel syndrome results from factors that increase pressure on the median nerve and tendons in the carpal tunnel. Contributing factors can include:
