Supplemental Security Income

Applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in South Carolina can be a complex process.  The attorneys at Bernstein and Bernstein can help you file an SSI claim or assist with any appeals that might be necessary.

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program makes payments to people with limited income and resources if they have a physical or mental condition that seriously limits their activities, or are aged 65 and older.  You or your children may be eligible for SSI. For more information about who is eligible for SSI, please visit this page on SSI Eligibility on the official website of the U.S. Social Security Administration.

SSI is different from Social Security Disability because the payments are made based on financial need, not prior work history.  The total amount of benefit varies based on your income, living arrangements, and other factors. The maximum amount you can receive usually changes yearly based on cost of living changes. In addition, South Carolina may pay a supplemental payment to some people receiving SSI.

If you are eligible to receive SSI, you may also be eligible for other benefits, such as Social Security Disability payments, Medicaid, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (food stamps).
