What Is the Camp Lejeune Water Contamination Problem?

Between 1953 and 1987, the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River in North Carolina were exposed to contaminated water. The contaminated water contained volatile organic compounds and other contaminants. This was the result of leaking fuel tanks, a local dry cleaning business, and on-base units that used chemicals to clean military equipment.

As a result, personnel and families at the base bathed in and ingested this harmful water. They were exposed to many carcinogenic toxins, which led to a wide array of devastating health issues, including:

  • Cancer (bladder, esophageal, kidney, lung, breast, etc.)
  • Infertility
  • Leukemia
  • Miscarriage
  • Hepatic steatosis
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Myelodysplastic syndromes
  • Neurobehavioral effects
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Renal toxicity
  • Scleroderma

What Types of Compensation Are Available for Camp Lejeune Water Contamination?

Living with such serious illnesses can be extremely expensive. Benefits from the VA can help address these costs. The VA will pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses not covered by any other medical benefits the individual is already receiving.
